This Friday the Student Council is sponsoring Crazy Hair day.

Week of September 29th

We have a lot of testing that will be taking place this week in our classroom.  Last week we finished Unit 1 in reading therefore we will be taking our Unit 1 Skills Test this week.  During the week of a Unit Skills Test, there is NO SPELLING TEST and also no weekly story that we read.  In this new reading series, the Unit Tests are quite lengthy.  We will begin taking our reading test tomorrow, continue it on Wednesday, and use Thursday to finish it if the additional time is needed.

Tomorrow we will be playing a review game in class for our Unit C Science Test.  We will be taking the test on Wednesday.  Students have two review items they can be using to study – their Unit C Review Sheet and also their Crossword Review which I will be handing back today.

Last week we completed Topic 3 in Math.  We started our practice test on Friday and will be finishing that today before we take the test this afternoon.  This test will be completed on-line, therefore students will not have an opportunity for corrections on this particular test.

The Candy Apple fundraiser continues this week and next week. Orders are due Friday, October 10th.  Please return all orders and payments by that time.

This Friday is "Chicago Sports Team Day" at CCIS.  Students are encouraged to wear clothing representing their favorite Chicago sports team.

1st Trimester Midterm reports will be sent home this week.  Just a reminder that we are only halfway completed with the first grading period.  I discussed with the students that there is still plenty of time for grades to be changed – both in a negative and positive way.  If students are happy with their current grades they need to continue working hard in order to keep their grades where they are at.  On the other hand, if students are not content with their current grades, there is still plenty of time for them to bring their grades up.

On Wednesday, October 1st, Mrs. Vignocchi will be hosting the first CCIS School Store of this school year.  Students can bring in money and shop to purchase different items.  Mrs. Vignocchi went through the different items that will be available for purchase with the students during their library time last week.  The store runs from 7:40-8:05AM.

Week of September 22nd

We are entering the final week of Unit 1 in reading.  Our schedule will be the same this week as it's been the past 4 weeks as far as reading the weekly story on Wednesday and taking the weekly test on Thursday.  However, next week our schedule will change as we will be preparing for our Unit 1 Reading Skills Test.

This Friday is Pajama/Stuffed Animal Day at CCIS.  Students can wear pajamas and bring in a stuffed animal if they would like.  If the stuffed animal becomes a distraction, they will be asked to put it in their locker for the remainder of the day.

We have started Topic 3 in math.  Topic 3 involves Place Value.  Students still should spend some time practicing their multiplication facts as we are continuing to take our daily multiplication tests.

Week of September 15th

Just a reminder, pictures are this Friday.  Many students have turned in their picture forms already.  If you would like for your child to receive school pictures, please turn in the picture form on or before Friday.  All students will get their picture taken for the yearbook regardless if they are purchasing pictures or not.

Friday is also Tech Day.  Students are responsible for any tech device they bring in.

We will be taking our Topic 2 Math Test on Wednesday of these week.  We will be reviewing on Tuesday.  I will have math tests graded on Wednesday and then corrections will be due Thursday morning.

There is a PSO meeting tomorrow night, September 16th, at 6:30PM in the CCIS Cafeteria.  All parents that are able to attend are encouraged to go.

Any student wishing to turn in a T-Shirt design for the CCIS T-Shirt competition must turn their design in by next Monday, September 22nd.  Also, if you have not turned in the Art permission slip, please do so by Thursday of this week.

Week of September 8th

Math test corrections are due tomorrow (Monday).  If any students want to receive additional points on their test they needed to correct their mistakes, have a parent sign the test, and then they will need to turn it in.  Test corrections are not mandatory, however I would strongly advise students taking advantage of this opportunity.

Wednesday of this week will be an 11:35AM early dismissal.  Please discuss with your child how he/she will be getting home on Wednesday if it is different than what they are used to doing after school.  We will also be taking our reading MAP test on Wednesday.  This will be our final MAP test of the Fall season.

I sent picture forms home on Friday.  Pictures are not until Friday, September 19th.  Forms can be returned any time and I will hold on to them until picture day.

We will be starting Topic 2 this week in Math.  I have provided students their IXL log-in information.  We will use this website to practice math skills at school, but this is also something they can be doing on their own.  Students should also to continue to practice their multiplication facts.

The first student council meeting is Wednesday, September 10th at 7:30AM.

Week of September 2nd

This week we start MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) testing.  Our first test will be our Math portion, and we will be taking that Tuesday afternoon.  We will be taking our Reading portion next week.  The students will also take these two tests in both the winter and the spring to track their progress throughout the school year.

Students will be receiving their spelling lists Tuesday.  With it being a short week, please be sure to remind your child to study his/her list of words.  We will still read our weekly story on Wednesday of this week and take the reading test on Thursday.

We will be having our first math test on Friday.  The day before the math test we always take time to review all material that was covered in the topic.  Students will also have a practice test that they can review problems from in order to prepare them for the test.  We have started our daily multiplication quizzes.  Some students are doing a great job while other students need a lot of practice with their multiplication facts.

This Friday night is the first home football game.  Hopefully some of the students will be able to make it out to the game to cheer on our high school football team.  On Friday of this week, the students will be read an announcement on what type of behavior is expected when attending a football game at the high school.

Week of August 25th

Hopefully the students are starting to get into a little bit of a routine.  Here is some important information for this week:

We will be starting our first story in our reading series.  Unless it is a short week, we usually read the story on Wednesday and take the selection test on Thursday.  Students will be receiving their spelling lists on Monday and the test will be on Friday.  I will be providing the students a specific link to www.spellingcity.com which will provide them a program that allows them to study their spelling words on their own without the help of another person.  I will be posting that link on my blog for all of the students to use.

Also, this week we are starting our math multiplication timings.  Each day we will take a 1-minute multiplication timing.  In order for the students to be successful this year in math it is very important they learn their multiplication facts.  These are not for a grade but strictly practice.  Aside from the multiplication timings, we will be continuing Topic 1.  Just a reminder, if a student finishes his/her math homework at school and I check it and they have all of the problems correct, I will put a "check" next to their math homework in their assignment notebook to acknowledge to you that it has been completed and checked.

On Friday, our class will be holding our 1st Semester Student Council elections.  We will be voting for 1 Boy and 1 Girl to represent our class.  In order to run for student council, any student interested must give a short speech on why he/she would be the best person to represent our class.  Any student that runs but is not elected may run again in December for our 2nd semester representatives.  Student council meetings are held in the mornings before school at 7:30AM on the following dates:

September 10
September 24
October 8
October 22
November 5
November 19
December 3
December 17

Please consider the dates and times of the meetings.  It is very important that if a student is selected they are able to make it to the meetings.

Week of March 31st

I hope everyone had a relaxing spring break.  We have now entered the stretch run of the school year.  The calendar will soon be changing to April and before we know it, May.  Here is some important information for this week:

Tuesday - McDonalds Fundraiser - McDonald's will be donating a portion of the sales between 5-8PM on Tuesday night to CCIS.  Students will be given a coupon to bring home that needs to be presented upon purchasing your meal.  This is great way for CCIS to raise some extra money.

Wednesday - Last day to register for the "Donuts for Dad" or "Muffins for Mom" events.  Please call the main office if you would like to register.

Friday - Baseball Day - As the Major League Baseball season kicks off this week, we will be celebrating it by having a baseball day in our classroom.  All of the lessons on Friday will be baseball related.  Throughout the day, students will be able to enjoy food that they might eat if they were to attend a baseball day.  Go Cubs!
